The National Mission for Clean Ganga and the National Institute of Urban Affairs, with support from the World Bank, are preparing Urban River Management Plans (URMPs) for 60 river cities in the Ganga Basin. In Phase 1, five cities have been taken up in the state of Uttar Pradesh: Bijnor, Mathura-Vrindavan, Mirzapur, Shahjahanpur and Gorakhpur.
Gorakhpur took the lead and convened its first URMP Multi-Stakeholder Working Group (MSWG) meeting on Wednesday, 21st May 2025. The meeting was chaired by Hon’ble Mayor Dr. Manglesh Kumar Srivastava and co-chaired by Municipal Commissioner Sh. Gaurav Singh Sogarwal, IAS.
Prior to the MSWG meeting, officials from NIUA and SMCG visited the ongoing innovative works on waterbody and drain rejuvenation, the integrated waste management model, and explored the potential that the Rapti and Rohini rivers hold for the city.
The working group members discussed building the URMP vision around holistic river ecosystem planning, moving away from siloed approaches, and embracing the route of nature-based solutions/ strategy design.
Gorakhpur is also one of the first cities in India to implement a fully automated Urban Flood Early Warning & Decision Support System with real-time monitoring, flood forecasts, and community response.
