Academic Engagement with Amity University, Greater Noida: Guest Lecture

About the Event

The River Cities Alliance (RCA) Secretariat is dedicated to helping river cities plan and implement interventions for the rejuvenation and sustainable management of rivers within their boundaries. Guided by the Urban River Management Framework — jointly developed by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) — the Secretariat continues to promote citizen engagement as a cornerstone of effective river stewardship. One of the ways the RCA Secretariat advances this goal is through active collaboration with academic institutions across India.

As part of this initiative, Ms. Simranpreet Kaur, Senior Urban Environment Specialist, NIUA, delivered an in-person lecture at Amity University, Greater Noida, attended by over 40 Bachelor of Architecture students from the 5th and 7th semesters. Her session, titled “Introduction to Urban Rivers: Challenges and Management,” explored the vital role urban rivers play as dynamic ecosystems that support biodiversity, provide essential ecosystem services, and shape the social and economic fabric of cities.

Ms. Kaur discussed how rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, and unsustainable land-use practices have disrupted natural river systems and degraded water quality. She emphasised the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach—drawing on ecology, hydrology, urban planning, and social sciences—to address these challenges. The session concluded with an exploration of frameworks for sustainable river management and ecological restoration, inspiring students to view urban rivers as living systems central to resilient and sustainable cities.
