Webinar on Innovative Approaches to Solid Waste Management — A Case of the Kham River

Webinar on Innovative Approaches to Solid Waste Management — A Case of the Kham River

About the Event

The RCA Secretariat hosted a focused 50-minute webinar on 25th September 2025, offering a deep dive into the Kham River Restoration Mission. The response was highly encouraging, with over 60 participants from across India, reflecting strong demand for concise, impact-driven sessions. Notably, the session saw active engagement from several RCA member cities, including representatives from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Telangana, and Jammu & Kashmir. Ms. Gauri Mirashi, CEO & Co-founder of CARPE & EcoSattva, led the session. Her on-ground expertise and insights into the Kham River restoration journey catalysed meaningful discussion and practical reflection.

Key insights from the session included:

  1. Effective solutions emerge when multiple data points are triangulated — on-ground data, existing ULB configurations, and community perceptions.
  2. The cyclic BOTRAM approach offered a cost-effective, structured, and continuous learning method for sustainable waste management: Baseline Assessment, On-boarding & Orientation, Training & Resource Mapping, Rejuvenation, Restoration, Recycling & Recovery, Awareness Campaigns, Monitoring & Maintenance.
  3. Through strategic planning, existing capacities and funding opportunities can be maximised by integrating local community-driven initiatives.
  4. A practical example shared was the establishment of a textile recovery facility, demonstrating how decentralised reuse and recycling systems can scale up circular economy practices while also generating revenue.
  5. River restoration and solid waste management cannot be addressed in silos. Such complex challenges require an integrated approach as demonstrated at Kham River.

This session reinforced the value of targeted, knowledge-rich exchanges within the RCA network.
