About the Event

On 22nd August 2025, a vital consultative meeting was held with key non-governmental stakeholders to collaborate on the Preparation of an Urban River Management Plan (URMP) for Delhi — a seminal initiative.

Dr. Debolina Kundu, Director of NIUA, and Shri Nalin Kumar Srivastava, Deputy Director General of NMCG, set the stage with their insightful addresses, highlighting the goals and expectations for the plan. They were joined by experts and representatives from several key organisations, including the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia (DFAT), IIT Delhi, INTACH, IWMI, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Mahila Housing Trust, TERI School of Advanced Studies, The Nature Conservancy, United RWAs Joint Action, and WRI India.

Key takeaways from the meeting included mapping issues and challenges spatially with active citizen participation to co-create solutions; adopting a systems approach to develop short-, medium-, and long-term solutions for Yamuna’s revival; maintaining Yamuna’s environmental flow through efficient reuse and recycling systems; highlighting cultural and intangible values of rivers to foster belongingness and responsible behaviour; and, setting achievable targets with a robust responsibility matrix for effective implementation.
